**This event is FREE and open to the community**
Join The BZD and Nieve Higgins, for an informative virtual program as we explore Kibbutz Be’eri.
Kibbutz Be’eri was founded on the eve of Yom Kippur in 1946. It is deeply rooted in the pioneering spirit that sought to incorporate the Negev into the future state of Israel. Situated in the northernmost part of the Eshkol Regional Council, Kibbutz Be’eri has long been renowned for its vibrant community life, diverse membership, and groundbreaking contributions to Israeli society and industry.
Over the years, Kibbutz Be’eri has developed a range of industries, but none have defined its success and growth more than **Be’eri Print**. This industry-leading company specializes in digital printing, wrapping processes, finishing, graphic design, and mailing services. Established in the 1950s, Be’eri Print has been the crown jewel of the Kibbutz, helping to drive its economic prosperity and cement its place as a leader in the region. While agricultural endeavors have also been significant, Be’eri Print stands out as the linchpin that propelled the Kibbutz to its current stature.
The journey of Kibbutz Be’eri has been challenging. Since October 2023, most of the 1,100 members were evacuated to emergency accommodations at a hotel in the Dead Sea area. However, as of now, around 100 members have returned to Be’eri to rebuild and maintain the community and its industries. Unfortunately, the majority of the population—particularly young families—have yet to return due to ongoing challenges. Over 120 homes and public buildings, including kindergartens, were destroyed, making it impossible for most families to return to Be’eri. This destruction, coupled with the need to process the immense trauma experienced, has necessitated a temporary solution. The transition to temporary housing in Kibbutz Hatzerim, initially planned for August 2024, has been delayed until October. This delay has caused significant distress, particularly for young families who were hoping to enroll their children in local schools near Hatzerim before the start of the school year.
Despite these setbacks, Kibbutz Be’eri is determined to rise again, better and stronger than ever. The community is focused on mental and emotional recovery, rebuilding, and planning for a brighter future. However, true healing will only be possible once all hostages are returned safely; 31 members of Be’eri were kidnapped to Gaza on October 7th, and as of now, 20 have returned.
Join us for an immersive virtual tour that explores Kibbutz Be’eri’s rich history and resilient spirit. From its humble beginnings to its current challenges, this session offers a unique glimpse into a community that has long been a beacon of hope and innovation in Israel.
