Shuls of Grandeur: Exploring the Synagogues of the Lower East Side

Event Description

Join the BZD for a captivating virtual journey into the cradle of American Jewish life on New York’s Lower East Side, led by Bradley Shaw and the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy. Together, we’ll explore the neighborhood’s two remaining grand synagogues and uncover the stories of the vibrant Jewish community that once flourished there.

Our tour begins at the Bialystoker Synagogue, the largest active Orthodox congregation on the Lower East Side today, famous for its brilliant zodiac murals and Tiffany-inspired stained-glass windows. We’ll then visit the Museum at Eldridge Street, a former synagogue magnificently restored and renowned for its breathtaking East Window by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans.

Together, these sites illustrate the rich architectural, cultural, and religious history of the Lower East Side Jewish community.
